Barack Obama Just Blasted the Senate's Trumpcare Bill

Sveva Terracina | 23 Giugno, 2017, 19:07

The Democrats across the board did not like what they saw, calling it mean, but neither did some Republicans. "The bill looks like we are going to keep all of the Obamacare subsidies - in fact, we may well exceed the Obamacare subsidies".

Other Republican senators thinks the bill goes too far in its cuts. The measure encountered immediate trouble as four GOP senators said they opposed it but were open to negotiations. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Mike Lee of Utah and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin. Obama says that he would gladly support "a plan that is demonstrably better than the improvements we made to our health care system, that covers as many people at less cost", no matter what party does it, which he notes the new Senate bill does not do. But, the Senate bill does not contain one favored measure for to bring down premiums: incentivizing healthy people to buy insurance.

CORNISH: Meanwhile, there are some Senate Republicans who aren't entirely on board yet, right? They can afford to lose only two GOP votes to pass the bill with 51 votes - and that banks on a tie-breaking vote from Vice President Mike Pence.

Democrats were quick to point out that they were not involved in any capacity with the drafting of the new health care bill, which Republicans drafted under reconciliation behind closed doors and out-of-committee hearings.

Liberals insist action to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act is nothing more than politics. On Monday, he emphasized his willingness to compromise on the issue in an interview with the Tribune.

Facing unanimous Democratic opposition, Republicans can suffer defections by no more than two of their 52 senators and still push the measure through the Senate. The new law would slash government support for Medicaid, which provides healthcare for poor Americans, and eliminate Obamacare's taxes on the wealthy and insurance companies.

It would also repeal most of the tax increases imposed by the Affordable Care Act to help pay for expanded coverage, in effect handing a broad tax cut to the affluent in a measure that would also slice billions of dollars from Medicaid, a program that serves 1 in 5 Americans, not only the poor but also nearly two-thirds of people in nursing homes. The House bill would have let states waive these protections, and allow insurers to charge people more based on their health conditions. That would focus the aid more on people with lower incomes than the House legislation, which bases its subsidies on age.

But he also made clear that the bill affects all Americans, not just those who get insurance via the ObamaCare exchanges or Medicaid. "She has met with and heard the concerns of many Mainers about their health care challenges, and she will continue to do so as she studies the impact of this legislation on ME and the nation".

He said cuts to Medicaid and reduced insurance subsidies in the bill would hit Georgia especially hard. The bill calls for deep cuts to Medicaid and entitlement programs. What will happen to pregnant mothers, children with disabilities, poor adults and seniors who need long-term care once they can no longer count on Medicaid?

Anne Dunkelberg, associate director for the left-leaning Center for Public Policy Priorities, said the proposed changes to Medicaid were alarming.

This is the same language contained in the House Republican health care bill, which is bad news, as it means the provision is more likely to become law.

Then there's the cost-sharing subsidies.

Capitol Police spokeswoman Eva Malecki said numerous demonstrators removed themselves from their wheelchairs and lay down on the floor, blocking the hallway. Obamacare is working, they insist. Like the House, the Senate wants to leave up to the states whether policies must cover such services as emergency, maternity and mental health care.

The House approved its version of the bill last month.
