Eboni Williams: Democrats Are 'Delusional' If They Stick With Pelosi

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of Calif. speaks to reporters during a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington Thursday Eboni Williams: Democrats Are 'Delusional' If They Stick With Pelosi

It's true that Handel's charisma is "limited" and that her campaign was given a big boost by the Republicans' successful efforts to paint Ossoff as a "dangerous liberal" who had been "hand-picked" by the reviled House Democratic leader, Nancy Pelosi. Indeed, some Democratic lawmakers in the House are now afraid that their party will lose seats to the GOP in next year's midterm elections.

On "The Fox News Specialists", Eric Bolling echoed the president's sentiments, pointing out that Democrats have lost more than 60 House seats with Pelosi as House speaker and then minority leader. And while Republicans are rightly happy to have held on in Georgia, they should consider it sobering that they didn't manage to win back the white college graduates that Trump lost there.

Earlier this year, Republicans won special elections in Montana and Kansas, while a Democrat won a race in California. It also lacked anyway to substantively convince the average politically uninterested citizen why they should give a damn about the Democratic Party. Donald Trump's approval rating is bad, and the generic congressional ballot favors Democrats.

The Georgia win will help Republicans field better candidates in 2018. Yet in Ossoff, the party had hoped that they had found a new way to defeat the Republicans with a "message of peace and civility".

The result no doubt comes as relief for Republicans who had grown concerned about whether their party, buffeted by the scandals that have plagued the Republican president, could hold the seat in Georgia's sixth district that became the most expensive congressional race in U.S. history. Democrats don't need a majority of those voters, but they do need to do better than Clinton did, because no number of Latinos in San Antonio or college graduates in the Dallas suburbs can make up for the Senate seats in the Midwest and the Plains.

It is the sixth-most educated district in the country and chock full of moderate, suburban Republicans.

Trump said in a Twitter comment, "Well, the Special Elections are over and those that want to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN are 5 and O!"

Rice's sentiment was echoed by other House Democrats in recent months including Reps. That's not to mention what it could mean in Washington. Ryan lists home ownership, health care, and the price of energy as key issues his party should focus on.

"Ossoff's problem is that he didn't win the first round", Brian Fallon, senior adviser to Priorities USA, a Democratic super PAC, said in an interview.

Pelosi brushed off the tweet, contending that Trump hadn't actually written it himself because "it's a classic Republican line". Paradoxically, if Georgia's result encourages the Senate to join in passing a deeply flawed Obamacare repeal bill, it could hurt the GOP in the long run. She has beat back all comers, including last fall, when Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan of OH ran against her. Ryan fell well short but garnered dozens of votes, enough to underscore dissatisfaction with Pelosi and with her aging leadership team that has left promising young Democrats with few places to rise.

Pelosi, for her part, addressed the controversy head on Thursday during a press conference in the Capitol, where she defended her leadership track record and practically taunted the critics calling for her removal.

"People say to me all the time, 'You raise more money than anybody ... why don't you spend some of your money on yourself?'" she said. When you nationalize races, Republicans will take more than the president into account. In that same Journal-Constitution poll, by the way, 6th District Republicans disapproved of Pelosi by a staggering 91 percent.

President Donald Trump has declared that he never made and doesn't have recordings of his private conversations with ousted former FBI Director James Comey.
