Protesters Arrested Following Republican Health Care Bill

Letter to the Editor 06-23-17 Obama blasts Senate health plan for its “fundamental meanness”

When Senate Republicans revealed their plan Thursday to replace the Affordable Care Act, Pennsylvania political figures quickly tallied the effects its passage may have in the state. The bill's biggest obstacle could be opposition from within the Republican party.

Less reasonably, both plans call for slashing taxes that helped pay for Obamacare's insurance subsidies.

The bill also would repeal the mandate that employers provide coverage, so more people (in any income bracket) could also end up in that boat.

Will people have to get insurance or be charged more for going without insurance?

ACA: Did not create high-risk pools.

The plan keeps some popular parts of Obamacare.

"Taken together, this is a bad deal for New Hampshire and a bad deal for the American people", Shaheen said in a statement.

But it then allows states to opt out of that requirement. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said, "The president said the Senate bill needed heart".

In the coming years, states could also change what are considered essential health benefits like maternity care and chronic-disease management, which insurers now have to cover.

In short, the Senate version still plans to phase out Planned Parenthood funding for one year. So we have very serious concerns about changing that open-ended nature of funding Medicaid in the federal state partnership to capping it. Medicaid clearly is in the sights of Republicans, though they claim of course that their plans will pump money into insurance to "stabilize" the market and help the uninsured.

But that ended Thursday after Senate Republicans unveiled their health care bill.

The bill puts a one-time, $2 billion shot into federal efforts to combat the nationwide opioid crisis, an amount some Republican senators from hard-hit states said is far less than they'd hoped. The Kentucky Republican aims to have a vote on the proposed legislation next week, prior to Congress' July 4 recess.

Asked what would need to be included in the bill to get him on board, Paul said: "It has to look less like Obamacare light - it's got to look like what we promised". Avik Roy is a physician and founder of the conservative Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity.

The Senate bill largely uses people's incomes as the yardstick for helping those without workplace coverage to buy private insurance.

"This bill is really, really harmful for low income individuals", says Janel George, director of federal reproductive rights and health at the National Women's Law Center. Discrimination based on pre-existing conditions could become the norm again. Currently, all plans must cover 10 categories of care, including prescription drug coverage, maternity care, preventive services like birth control, and mental health care.

Also under the Senate proposal, insurers would be able to charge older customers more for their coverage than they could under the Affordable Care Act, the Washington Post reported. The way this bill cuts health care is heartless.

Medicaid is also substantially more popular than the GOP's proposal, which would include deep spending cuts to the program.
