Sekulow downplayed Trump's tweets, saying the president is simply responding to what he sees in the media in a way that can reach millions of his supporters.

Attorney Jay Sekulow appeared on several news programs Sunday and Monday to say Trump is not under federal investigation. Some other people who know precisely how politicized the legal system has become, and like it that way, will exploit the fact that you are under investigation to stigmatize you.

Kushner, who is also Trump's son-in-law, came under scrutiny last month when The Washington Post reported that he proposed setting up a secret back channel of communications, using Russian facilities, between Trump and Moscow during the transition period.

The Washington Post report to which Conway referred was the story that Robert Mueller had widened his probe to include interviewing intelligence officials about whether Trump tried to obstruct justice. The Post cited multiple unnamed sources familiar with those interview requests. From the sounds of it, Sherman is already preparing for the possibility that Vice President Mike Pence will take over for Trump as president.

The Senate Intelligence Committee is looking into how Russians tried to obstruct the USA election past year and how they might attempt to do it again in the future.

"Trump has a compulsion to counterattack and is very pugnacious", Gingrich said on ABC's This Week. Before Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, Rod Rosenstein, the Trump-appointed deputy attorney general, wrote a memorandum recommending that Comey be dismissed.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders last week said Trump had "no intention" of firing Mueller, although "the president has the right to".

The tweet sparked speculation that Trump may pull a nuclear option by firing Mueller and Rosenstein, a move senior aides have fervently advised against - given that it could provoke a constitutional crisis.

What has Trump's legal team said?

But Jay Sekulow, part of Trump's legal team, said the president was writing about reports of an investigation, not an actual probe. Sekulow happened to let slip that Trump is under investigation, and Wallace pounced.

Wallace noted that the "tape will speak for itself". Asked about the possibility that an investigation has developed and the president just doesn't know, Sekulow says, "I can't read people's minds". There are reports that special counsel Robert Mueller will in charge of a new investigation into Trump's ties and his aide's ties to Russian Federation.

Even after the President himself tweeted about being under investigation in relation to the summary dismissal of FBI Chief James Comey, his attorney has done an about face and denied that it is true.

Sekulow has long appeared as a commentator on Fox News and Christian Broadcasting Network, and has burnished his television chops by hosting his own show, ACLJ This Week.
