Nevada senator becomes fifth Republican to oppose healthcare bill

Parmenio Sano | 24 Giugno, 2017, 06:07

Terry McAuliffe's administration said the measure would help states that expanded their Medicaid programs under the Affordable Care Act at the expense of states that didn't, while reducing long-term federal funding for a program that has been shared equally with the state.

Democrats have blasted the Senate bill, with some calling it "meaner".

GOP Sens. Rob Portman of OH and Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia also expressed concerns about the bill's cuts to Medicaid and drug addiction efforts.

"We agreed on the need to free Americans from Obamacare's mandates".

A one time fund of $2 billion for addiction and mental health treatment "is pocket change" said Keith Humphreys, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University.

Assuming that 23 million fewer people would have coverage, we estimate that the coverage losses from the Senate bill would result in 27,700 additional deaths in 2026.

"It's simply not the answer", the Nevada Republican said at a news conference alongside Gov. Brian Sandoval in Las Vegas.

"California has made the most progress under Obamacare".

The bill also changes the subsidies for those who obtain insurance on the ACA's individual marketplace. The estimate was released Friday by Arizona's Medicaid agency, which analyzed the effects of the legislation on the state health insurance program for low-income people.

The plan keeps some popular parts of Obamacare. It would deny coverage to many people with pre-existing conditions.

The Senate bill would allow states to opt out of those provisions, which would permit insurers to sell slimmer, but less expensive plans.

Senate Republicans' new health bill cuts taxes by almost $1 trillion over the next decade, mostly for corporations and the richest families in America. "Millions of families will lose coverage entirely".

Senate Republicans, in their recently unveiled bill to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, included cuts to Medicaid funding that are even more cynical than what the House version of the legislation imposed-on both a political and policy level. The Senate Republicans' plan puts a lid on that by rolling back the Obama-era expansion of the program and then granting states a set amount of money for each person enrolled. It is also posted here, on Republican Senator Tom Cotton's website. But with some Republicans already saying they aren't ready to support the legislation, there is uncertainty over whether that is possible.

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is pushing for a vote before senators leave Washington, DC for the Fourth of July recess.

He also called it "an important and constructive first step in repealing Obamacare" making way for a "better, stable" system, in a statement released on Twitter. NPR's Alison Kodjak begins our coverage. If they vote against a repeal bill now, they will be charged with not fulfilling their years-long promise back home. "And we'll see if we can take care of that", Trump said in an interview with Fox News that aired on Friday, calling the group of conservative lawmakers "four very good people". In Ohio, Anthem Inc. has announced it will pull out of health insurance markets in most of the state next year.

The measure largely uses people's incomes as the yardstick for helping those without workplace coverage to buy private insurance.
