Hamilton takes 66th career pole in Azerbaijan GP

Williams driver Lance Stroll of Canada steers his vehicle during the Formula One Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, Azerbaijan, Sunday, June 25, 2017.

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton has claimed a stunning pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the 66th of his career, directly ahead of team-mate Valtteri Bottas with world championship leader Sebastian Vettel fourth. "Absolutely not", he said. "I managed to put it all together when it mattered and have the team to thank".

"So yeah, just went over the kerb, bottomed out, the auto jumped and hit him and I got a puncture. Giggling like a little schoolboy". The Baku circuit might not be the best track to have a race on, but it sure looks like a blast to drive. Daniil Kvyat's Toro Rosso also ground to a halt, bringing out the virtual―and eventually the actual―safety auto and allowing Bottas to make up some ground.

At the end of lap 19 the safety vehicle is in and the race resumes.

Vettel, who claimed Hamilton had "brake-tested" him, was handed a 10-second stop and go penalty but Hamilton claimed the punishment allowed his rival to get away with risky driving that put them both at risk.

The 3.7-mile track was littered with debris. The Ferrari driver had restart his race after the red flag period but had to retire eventually at Lap 48 due to terminal water pressure problems.

With the cars parked in the pit lane, mechanics made minor repairs. Hamilton made his way into DRS range of Vettel in the battle for fourth but couldn't make a final pass, and team-mate Bottas broke the hearts of Williams fans, taking Stroll for second place on the line.

Following a Safety Car start, the Briton got the drop on Vettel and retained the lead. Check out the cheeky powerslide from the Renault of Nico Hulkenberg on the exit!

Daniel Ricciardo never thought he would win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after finding himself in 17th position as a series of chaotic incidents handed him victory on Sunday.

As we mentioned earlier Valtteri Bottas, will start from the second place, and Kimi Raikkonen will be right behind him. "It was just a insane race".

At lap 30 Hamilton leads Vettel by 1.6 seconds, followed by Ricciardo (5.8s), Stroll (7.7s), Magnussen (18.8s), Alonso (19.9s), Ocon (21.6s), Bottas (23.4s), Sainz (24.0s) and Grosjean (31.0s).

"I'm just lost for words", said Stroll, who earned his first podium finish.

'Did I think then I'd win, absolutely not! "He's done something similar a couple of years ago in China with the restart, it's just not the way to do it I think".

"We just stayed out of trouble".

"We're here to race as I said, we're grown ups and people expect us to race and use our elbows, that's what people want, here and there you might get a bit close, but people want real overtaking not just us driving past, so after that I had a handful obviously". Englishman Jolyon Palmer however, retired on lap seven following an engine issue.
