While winds will remain relatively light, temperatures will throttle up over California and much of the western United States this weekend.

The fires have been fueled by a crop of grass that grew from welcomed spring rains.

Emergency officials and police are urging British Columbia residents to respect evacuation orders ahead of fast-moving wildfires, but some First Nations are standing their ground, successfully protecting their homes and property.

Chuck Wilsey told The Associated Press on Monday that he's relieved, but cautious, and is already planning for the next evacuation should it come.

Cal Fire said Tuesday night that almost 5,000 Californians were still under evacuation orders. It was 40 percent contained. Earlier technical challenges with the system have been fixed, Turner added.

Ultimately, Alphonse said staying was the right decision and it saved at least 10 homes. The fires have caused no deaths or injuries.

They believe many evacuees have not yet registered with the Red Cross.

McGarry said in her statement that Ontario's wildland fire risk has been assessed and there are the needed resources at hand "to ensure the necessary assistance for communities should we start to experience an escalating situation here in Ontario". The blaze has destroyed at least 17 structures, but authorities could not say how many of those were homes. An evacuation order affecting that region was extended yesterday as the 50-square kilometre Gustafsen wildfire burns west of town.

A wildfire burning in near Summer Lake in south-central OR has destroyed a hunting cabin and an outbuilding, reports the Associated Press.

The U.S. fires so far have been less disruptive than those in Canada's British Columbia province, which have forced 14,000 people from their homes and disrupted logging and mining operations.

Dozens of residents were also evacuated when the fire broke out on Saturday, officials said. "We are keeping a close eye on that".

Residents were instructed to gather their belongings and make arrangements to leave at a moment's notice, said the broadcaster.

A small wildfire east of San Jose has destroyed three homes and forced evacuations. Long-term patients at the Ashcroft Hospital were moved as a precaution. In total, there have been 602 fires since April 1; 12 of those started today.

The Supreme Court of British Columbia - which is "co-located" with the provincial court in Williams Lake - also issued an update on its website stating that the Supreme Court registry in Williams Lake is closed for the remainder or the week, and all proceedings scheduled for hearing have been adjourned. I can tell you we have made great progress on that fire.

"You see rapid fire growth in a lot of these fires, larger acreage consumption, which makes it very hard to firefighters to fight", said Bennet Milloy, spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
