Australian teen recovering from thousands of 'sea lice' bites

Teenager Sam Kanizay's bloody legs after possibly being bitten by something while bathing at Brighton Teen Emerges From Beach With Bloodied Legs After A Quick Dip

Sea lice plague beaches around the world from Australia to Florida, where they frequently wriggle inside bathing suits, causing little more than an itchy rash.

All Sam Kanizay did was cool his feet off in the water at Dendy Beach in Melbourne, Australia. What happened next was unexpected.

It was a combination of cold water numbing Kanizay's legs, bad luck, and standing still that led to an exceptional number of bites.

"Whenever he will move, it will open up those wounds... so I think there'll be some time, probably, on the couch when he gets home". As reported by local newspapers, his legs carry thousands of small wounds reminiscent of a pin jab.

"There was no stopping the bleeding", his father said.

Photos show Kanizay was profusely bleeding from his calves down, in a garish downpour that puddled around his feet.

A spokesperson for Monash Health, which oversees Dandenong Hospital where Sam was sent to, said they are still assessing the patient and it could be too early for his doctor to comment on his case.

It comes as the teen's dad Jarrod Kanizay revealed his son still can't walk three days after he was rushed to hospital.

Jarrod returned to the beach with raw meat on Sunday and managed to catch a few of these bugs, that he believes were responsible. He posted footage of the parasitic crustaceans quickly devouring the meat. "It was just unlucky", marine biologist Genefor Walker-Smith said in a statement.

Sea fleas are scavengers that are part of the lysianassid group. When he retrieved it, the meat was crawling with tiny bug-like creatures, and that's when marine experts believed they knew the culprit.

Doctors and scientists said they were baffled by the severity of the injury.

"It's possible the amphipods contained an anti-coagulant, which would account for the inability to stop the flowing blood and that the very cold water may be the reason Sam didn't feel the bites", Dr Walker-Smith said.

Experts said the amphipods had no venomous properties and would not cause lasting damage.

"This was a first, so that's why I query whether it's sea lice or some other creature that have caused the issue".

"My dad sort of just gave me this amusing stare, and I gave him a stare because we both just had no idea what was going on", he said. He added that people should not be so concerned. Had Kanizay been moving through the water, it's unlikely the amphipods would have been likely to stay attached to his skin.
