After seeing some early volatility, treasuries moved moderately higher over the course of the trading session on Friday. Japanese markets were closed for a holiday.

The S&P 500 has closed within 0.30% of its opening level in 16 of the last 17 days of trading.

The modest rebound came at the end of a turbulent week on Wall Street as escalating tensions between the US and North Korea rattled global markets.

North Korea threatened a missile strike at US territory Guam.

NORTH KOREA: President Donald Trump warned North Korea of "fire and fury" this week in response to recent threats from Pyongyang, which said it was examining plans for attacking Guam, a US territory in the Pacific with a military base.

Stocks around the world sank as the threats back and forth between the USA and North Korea are digested.

In the eurozone, the Paris CAC 40 dropped nearly 0.7 percent to 5,081.92 points compared with the closing level on Thursday.

The drop by Disney came after the company reported fiscal third quarter earnings that came in above estimates but on weaker than expected revenues.

Federal funds futures suggested the chance of rate hike in December fell to 40 percent from 42 percent shortly before the release of the data. The euro is down 0.1 percent at $1.1738.

And in a textbook-type cross-asset move toward safety in times of trouble, the Japanese yen hit an eight-week high against the US dollar while spot gold also reached a two-month high. The Dow slid 33.08 points, or 0.2 percent, to 22,085.34.

While the data gave investors appetite for growth sectors such as information technology and biotechnology it soured them to rate-sensitive stocks such as banks, said Keith Lerner, Chief Market Strategist, SunTrust Advisory services in Atlanta. It's also called the "fear index". The NYSE Arca Biotechnology Index plunged by 3.4% to its lowest closing level in well over a month.

Steel and networking also saw some weakness on the day, although selling pressure was somewhat subdued.

The biggest risers on the FTSE 100 Index were Smurfit Kappa up 38p to 2,224p, Persimmon up 39p to 2,501p, DCC up 70p to 6,885p, Barratt Developments up 6p to 595.5p.

World stocks fell again Friday following an escalation of threats exchanged between the US and North Korea.

Despite the drop, analysts said the market seemed to be a bit sceptical that the North Korea situation would grow into a major crisis, noting that the losses were still not that deep.

The index was down by 1.44% or 108.12 points to close at 7389.94 on Thursday in its worst performance for four months.

The major European markets also showed notable moves to the downside on the day. Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 0.6 percent.

Korea's Samsung Electronics fell 2.8% Friday.
