Champions Chelsea reduced to nine and beaten 3-2 by Burnley

Acilia Dean | 13 Agosto, 2017, 04:40

Every Chelsea player will have to run just a bit harder and for slightly longer without the 29-year-old's bustling frame at the core of proceedings.

Chelsea's hopes looked to have gone when a late challenge from Cesc Fabregas on Jack Cork added a second yellow to his first, received for dissent, to leave the Blues with nine men.

Head coach Antonio Conte provided a fitness update ahead of the game at Stamford Bridge, revealing Pedro has not recovered from a problem he sustained before being sent off in the Community Shield against Arsenal last week.

Antonio Conte arrived to Stamford Bridge needing to piece together a squad in tatters, following a disastrous 10th place finish on the ladder as the defending champions in the campaign prior.

"I'm very proud of my players, but in this game we saw two faces - the first half negative and the second half positive".

Chelsea begin their title defence against Burnley on Saturday and Conte is concerned that his squad is not strong enough and wants more arrivals before the transfer window closes.

It was to get worse for the champions in the first half though as Vokes made it 3-0 to Burnley in the 42nd minute when the striker headed a wonderful Defour cross into the corner of the net. Tiemoue Bakayoko was probably the only new recruit who was Conte's first choice, as the same can not be said for Alvaro Morata and Antonio Rudiger, who are clearly players with plenty of potential, but will struggle to live up to their hefty price tags.

'If the club decides to loan out players for their development it is because they're not ready to play for Chelsea'. My only task is to focus on the pitch, what happens on the pitch, during the training session to work with my players.

Chelsea down to 9 men.

"At the start of this season it's simple to tell that in this league there are six top teams who should be fighting for the title". Since the aforementioned match, we have drawn with the Clarets twice, beating them 3-0 in the beginning of last season.

"Today big decisions changed the outcome, quite obviously", the Burnley manager said.

He said, "I'm delighted to be joining BT Sport, ' said Lampard, who will be at Wembley on Sunday as Arsenal take on Chelsea".

Going into Saturday's home match against Burnley, it could even be argued that Chelsea is beginning the season in a weaker position despite a summer outlay of around 140 million pounds ($180 million). "So that result is huge, a massive win for us at the start of the season".
