Fitbit launched their first smartwatch, the Fitbit Ionic today, and while the device was always expected to be cross-platform the company did not explicitly confirm support for Windows Phone/ Windows 10 Mobile.

The smartwatch also offers users access to personalized and adaptable workouts, and it is water resistant up to 50 meters, which will give the wearer the ability to track their swims.

Fitbit is even partnering with Adidas on a "special edition" version of the Iconic coming next year that will include training programs; Apple similarly partnered with Nike with the Apple Watch Nike+ version of its smartwatch.

As mentioned above, the Ionic is available to pre-order now. The watch is slated for release in October, at which point it will be available on Amazon and other retail outlets.

It will be available in other shops from October 2017. Dubbed Fitbit Ionic, this is a device with features that compete squarely with the Apple Watch and Garmin's stable of sports watches.

Fitbit, which has dominated the fitness band market for the past decade, is finally entering the smartwatch market with a $299/£299 Fitbit Ionic.

The display is colour, with a spherical glass touchscreen with amplified brightness of up to 1,000 nits so you should be able to read your stats in bright sunlight or a low-lit room.

You can pick between the Sport, Leather and Classic versions.

Fitbit is going beyond fitness to make the Ionic a more well-rounded watch.

I tried this out in a Fitbit demo store, and it was just as quick and seamless as using Apple Pay on an Apple Watch.

There are the usual notifications, including call, text and calendar alerts. Unlike other heart rate sensors that use light and its reflections to measure your pulse, this is a new technology that we are yet to test, but it comes with a big promise. Where the Blaze was arguably just a watch-shaped fitness tracker, the Ionic features a more desirable design and true smart watch features like GPS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi networking, custom watch faces, and, of course, apps.

Here is everything you need to know about the new Fitbit smartwatch, including how much it costs, when it will be available and what features it will bring with it.

The operating system appears to be Fitbit's, but Fitbit claims "cross-platform compatibility".

The smartwatch is the company's first device to include a sensor that can estimate blood oxygen levels, called a relative SpO2 sensor. It has 2.5 gigabytes of storage, which can be used for offline music listening, either by adding music users have previously purchased (roughy 300 songs), or through Pandora Premium via downloadable playlists. The company also launched its new Aria 2 smart scale and Flyer wireless headphones on Monday. For now, Visa, MasterCard and American Express cards from the "top banks" are supported in over 10 markets. Fitbit says it expects apps such as Flipboard, Game Golf, Nest and Surfline to appear this autumn.
